IN MEMORY OF BEVERLY ECKERT

In Memory of Beverly Eckert

All of us are trying to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss of our friend, Beverly Eckert. I had the honor of knowing Beverly for the last seven years. She was one of the most articulate, elegant and intelligent people I have ever met. Her love story with her husband Sean, who died on September 11, 2001, was inspiring. As the towers burned, Beverly was on the phone with her beloved husband. Her elegance in recounting their last words of love to each other was haunting and heartbreaking. Beverly channeled her grief, which was always evident within her beautiful blue eyes, into action to make our nation safer and to honor all who died on 9/11. Despite her pain, whenever she was with other 9/11 families she always had an infectious smile. She had a knack for making us all feel special. Read more »

TERRIBLE LOSS FOR ALL IN PLANE CRASH OF OUR DEAR FRIEND BEVERLY ECKERT

Dear Friend,

All of us at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Beverly Eckert, courageous widow of 9/11 victim Sean Rooney (an employee of Aon Corporation, who worked on the 98th floor of the South Tower at the World Trade Center), and generous advocate for the work of creating this Memorial and Museum and other important 9/11- related efforts.

Beverly was aboard Continental Flight 3407 that crashed in Buffalo, NY last night. She was on her way to Buffalo to celebrate what would have been Sean’s 58th birthday with family and friends, and to attend the presentation of a scholarship she had established in his memory at Canisius High School. BLESSINGS TO ALL FOR 2009 FROM GEAR UP FOUNDATION

I wanted to wish all our supporters a blessed 2009. As we enter this new year we do so with hope. We have started the new year with pledges for massive equipment donations from sevearl sources and we must now find equally impressive finanical support from our friends and those we are yet to meet. It takes a lot to fulfill the requirements of firefighters in need and it is also a challenging task to properly pay tribute to those who gave their lives on 911 and those who continue to give their lives each and every day. I humbly ask all of you to step up and do something in support of our noble mission. We are in need of media experts to help promote our cause across the board along with those who are looking for a verified and trustworthy foundation who has withstood the test of time. PLEASE BE GENEROUS AND PLEASE HELP US TO GEAR UP!!!!

The FDNY will be slashing nighttime staff at a handful of firehouses around the city in a belt-tightening move that critics say threatens to increase response times and that has residents and union officials seeing red.

The department expects to save $9 million by deactivating three engine companies and one ladder for the overnight shift when the plan goes into effect on Jan. 17.

“It’s no secret that the city, the country is facing hard economic times,” Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said yesterday as he detailed a $60 million cost-cutting package. Read more »
